Usha Pisharody, an English teacher from Thrissur, writes in her favourite five movies

Roman Holiday

Debutante Audrey Hepburn worked with the seasoned Gregory Peck in this film, which has the timeless appeal of a fairy tale. It is about a princess who escapes from her cloistered life and spends some time enjoying the delights of Rome like a regular tourist, all in the company of a journalist. Eventually the dream run comes to an end with the princess returning to her life of the dutiful royal.

The movie speaks about what makes or breaks a relationship, and what forges a bond between seeming opposites. An elitist economist and a barely educated, middle-class homemaker develop an extra-marital relationship. Circumstances force them to separate, but fate brings them together.

Rudaali

Based on Mahashweta Devi’s story of professional mourners, Rudaali follows Shani through her trials in life, and her quest for tears. Dimple Kapadia excels in the role. Bhupen Hazarika’s poignant music fills the heart.

A brilliant star cast comes together in perhaps one of the most expensive indie films. Expansive in time, universes and souls, their acts of kindness impact across lifetimes. ‘The Cloud Atlas Sextet’, the theme music of the movie, is captivating.

Brie Larson and John Gallagher, as supervisors of a home for troubled teenagers, leave searing scars. Succinct, but always empathetic, Brie Larson deals with her own traumatic childhood, while helping Jayden, a young teenager, come to terms with the abuse she has faced.
