DELAND — Walking through the doors of the residence at 1125 Private Road is like walking back in time.
Built in 1962, almost every appliance, fixture, feature and element of the design is original, reminiscent of the time the home was built. The mid-century modern style home’s originality is a huge part of what makes it unique, said Jessica Levings, Realtor with Kemp Realty Group in DeLand.
“The features that were built into the home are still here,” Levings said. “It’s rare to find so many original features in a house from that time period. It’ like walking into a time capsule.”
The architecture and building materials contrast the sleek, lofty designs commonly found in modern homes. Brick, wood and terrazzo characterize the home’s vintage style, and the layout is simply different than that of other homes. The living room is especially wide and spacious, and the kitchen, dining room and bedrooms are connected in an out-of-the-ordinary, yet logical way.
“It’s such a unique style. The architecture is so different from what you normally see,” Levings said.
A small glass cutout in the wall by the front door serves as a “secret” peephole. It looks like a mirror from outside the front door, but from the inside, it is see-through like a window. There is handmade, wooden cabinetry and shelving throughout the house, from the kitchen to the master suite to the living room. A vintage scale was built into the wall by a closet in the master suite. It folds up into the wall when not in use.
All the house’s fixtures are fully functional, Levings said, and they offer “vintage touches” that preserve the old-school charm. Conversely, Levings called the home an “empty canvas” that could also be updated with more modern fixtures, if desired.
“There is a lot of opportunity to change or update it any way you want it,” Levings said. “You could easily maintain what’s here or make some necessary updates.”
Levings described it as a multi-generational home, with the guest suite’s location on the ground floor and the split floor plan.
Levings said the secluded property offers “tranquility” and privacy, as the name of the road suggests. Yet, the -location is convenient, Levings said. It’s a 10-minute drive to downtown DeLand and U.S. Highway 17-92.
“It seems far out, but it’s so close,” she said.
