Tesla Model Y Not Coming in 2019

Tesla CEO Elon Musk somewhat cleared the air on the upcoming Model Y crossover.

Amid strange comments and dismissing some questions altogether, Musk did manage to share some real information about the company. He dismissed a Reuters report that claimed Tesla was planning to begin production of the Model Y in November 2019, saying “The Reuters report is based on nothing. We will not be starting production of Model Y next year.” Instead, you can expect the new crossover to start closer to two years from now, making early 2020 a more likely prospect.

Musk also clarified that the company hasn’t decided where the Model Y will be built yet, but it definitely won’t be made in Fremont. The American automaker plans on making a decision on a second Tesla factory possibly next quarter, but no later than fourth quarter.

Tesla is also expected to announce the location of a new Gigafactory in China. Musk said that all future Gigafactories will incorporate vehicle production, suggesting Tesla will start producing vehicles in China.
