“Good thing,” says WH on Modi-Xi meeting

‘We have great relations with both’

The White House on Thursday termed the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China “a good thing”. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said during the daily briefing that the U.S. has good relations with both India and China.

“We don’t have an official policy, but certainly think it’s always good when other world leaders are getting along. And certainly when we can cooperate, that’s definitely a good thing. We have a great relationship with both countries, and hope to continue to do so,” Ms. Sanders said.

She was responding to a question on how the White House viewed the summit and whether President Donald Trump had a role in that.

Mr. Trump has vacillated between combative and conciliatory rhetoric with regard to China and Mr. Xi. He has also put India and China in the same basket of his nationalist priorities, accusing both of gaming America in trade and climate negotiations, and following protectionist policies.
