Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI 150 - Best diesels

The Golf is a front-running hatchback, and the diesel is a great long-distance cruiser

The Volkswagen Golf was one of the main models at the centre of the Dieselgate scandal, but the model that was affected was the older Mk6 Golf on sale until 2012. The Mk7 is a different story, as the TDI engines meet current Euro 6 emissions rules without the need to resort to defeat devices.

And the 2.0 TDI is a great choice for buyers who cover higher mileages and need an extra dose of pulling power. As well as having a healthy 148bhp, 2.0-litre versions of the Golf come with multilink rear suspension, rather than the torsion beam set-up in smaller-engined cars, and this helps boost the car's handling and comfort.

The 2.0 TDI really is a versatile engine, offering plenty of power to give the Golf a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds in six-speed manual guise, while this version also returns an official economy figure of 67.3mpg and a company car friendly emissions figure of 109g/km.

From there, you can add a DSG twin-clutch gearbox, or you can have the engine in three or five-door hatchback body styles, or as an Estate, including Alltrack off-road estate, or even as the Golf SV. And if you want more power, the Golf GTD has a 181bhp version of the 2.0 TDI.

All models get the latest VW tech on board, while trims range from the conventional SE to the plush GT and sport R-Line trims.
