It's a standout year for architecture winners in Waikato and Bay of Plenty
From the intimacy of a Coromandel bach hideaway to the large open spaces of Hamilton's revitalised inner city precinct, the 2018 NZIA Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards celebrate a wealth of contemporary architecture.
Edwards White Architects, a firm at the forefront of efforts to improve Hamilton's city centre, received five awards, one of them a Planning and Urban Design Award in association with AECOM for Victoria on the River.
The judges praised the way the amphitheatre park creates a "compelling new connection between Hamilton's city centre and its great, although often ignored, feature: the Waikato River".

Victoria on the River is a new urban precinct that links downtown Hamilton with the Waikato River. Designed by Edwards White Architecture and AECOM, the project has won an NZIA Planning and Urban Design Award.
"With its well-chosen materials, stepped gardens, terraces and wide boardwalks the park creates an atmosphere of peace and calm, and can also easily host larger crowds enjoying a riverside event".

Edwards White Architects also received two Commercial Design Awards, an Interior Architecture Award and a Housing Award for a house near the Waikato River. The River Retreat house, as it's known, was praised for its "delightful response to a narrow site".

Perched on a hillside above a bay on the Coromandel Peninsula, the DNA House by Crosson Architects has won an NZIA Waikato Housing Award.
COROMANDEL BACH
Crosson Architects won a Housing Award for the DNA House, a bach on the Coromandel Peninsula, which the judges described as "amazing, outstanding, superb".
"This is a meticulously crafted house with exceptional personality. It is uniquely attuned not just to the physical needs of its owners but to their metaphysical orientation.
Sited excellently for views and demonstrating a very gentle connection with the site, the house and its boardwalks, which extend the usable space of the compact structure, are wrapped with metal screens perforated with a map of the clients' DNA. Sophisticated and refined – although not above quirky features, such as a trap door with rope ladder – this house is a joy to visit."

The Walton House in Tauranga, by John Henderson Architecture, has a warm, timber-lined interior.
John Henderson Architecture won an award for the Walton House in Tauranga, which was crafted from timber sourced and milled on the clients' farm. The judges praised the "outstanding detailing, craftsmanship and workmanship".
RTA Studio won a Housing Award for the Turama house in Rotorua. "This unique gem – a culturally significant private residence hidden in suburbia – is a significant contemporary home with a design informed by Maketu and Taihiti ley lines," the judges noted. "The roof form, draped over the structure like a korowai (cloak), is framed with an iwi-inspired pattern in perforated steel. Inside, a fireplace positioned at intersecting geometries provides a meeting point for kōrero, while a play between public and private scales can be experienced in the large and welcoming double-height entranceway."
Mary's House at Lake Tarawera is another Housing Award winner. Designed by Bellbird Architect, this house with a "retro vibe" also won a Resene Colour Award.

It's all about the outdoors at Mary's House. This Lake Tarawera project, designed by Bellbird Architect, is a Housing Award winner.
And a Cambridge house by Sumich Chaplin was another Housing Award winner. The judges described the house as a "sophisticated farmhouse for a modern family, designed with a timeless aesthetic".
"The architecture has been excellently realised, and includes cleverly detailed, crafted and refined materials, of which the visual and structural qualities of locally sourced Hinuera stone are particular highlights."
