Brighton last night secured their Premier League safety with a memorable victory over a Manchester United side which was accused by manager Jose Mourinho of lacking “commitment and ambition”.
In a withering attack on his ineffective forwards, Mourinho said his side’s abject performance was proof that his players “are not as good as people think”.
The United manager, who has now overseen defeats to all three of the Premier League’s promoted teams this season, said the performance of his fringe players provided an answer to why he “always” picks the likes of Romelu Lukaku, who missed the game through injury, and Alexis Sánchez.
Mourinho started with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in attack for only the second time since the turn of the year, and both struggled to make any impact as Brighton controlled the game and claimed the three points that ensured they will return to Premier League action next season.
“For many months you are always asking why this player does not play, why this player is on the bench, why always Lukaku? I know my players better than you, and you do not know them so well to be always asking these questions,” said Mourinho, whose side remain in second place but will need to improve dramatically if they are to have any chance of defeating Chelsea in the upcoming FA Cup final.
“You have the answer now when you ask ‘why always Lukaku?’ We are probably not as good as people think we are individually.”
Mourinho did not single out individuals by name, but it was clear that his frustrations, which he repeated in multiple post-match interviews, were directed towards Rashford, Martial and Juan Mata, the third member of his attacking trio.
Rashford, in particular, had provoked his manager’s anger during the first half when he spurned a rare opportunity by hesitating on the ball and destroying the United attack.
“It was not good enough,” Mourinho said. “The players that replaced others did not perform at a good level and when individuals do that it is difficult for the team to play. Maybe now you will not ask me why A, B and C do not play so much.”
Mourinho also moved to absolve himself from blame for the lifeless performance, saying that he had repeatedly warned his squad of the need to match Brighton’s attitude.
“If you ask them [the players] they will tell you how long I spoke and how I long I tried before the game, during the week, trying to anticipate the scenario and trying to persuade them that the only way to compete against a team like Brighton is to have the same commitment and ambition they have.
“The attitude from the first minute and especially in the first half, they [Brighton] had more appetite. I did not succeed in persuading my players that getting the points is important. It is for me, but perhaps not for them.”
Brighton’s winner was scored by Pascal Gross, who headed home Jose Izquierdo’s cross at the start of a frantic second half. The ball appeared to have been cleared by Marcos Rojo, the United defender, but was eventually judged to have crossed the line by goal-line technology.
Brighton had already gone close to taking the lead though Glenn Murray, who had tested United goalkeeper David De Gea with a thunderous volley in the first half, and could have scored a second when Izquierdo fired wide soon after they had taken the lead.
Chris Hughton, the Brighton manager, said the circumstances of the victory were “ideal”, adding that United had hardly threatened Mathew Ryan’s goal.
“Normally when you win this type of game it's because you've played at a good level and United haven't,” Hughton said. “Maybe your keeper has to make some good saves and they've missed some chances. But they didn't have a clear-cut chance in 90 minutes, and Matty had to make a couple of decent saves only. We were good value for the win. It's given us Premier League survival.”
The result could not have been better timed for Brighton, who had not wince since March 4 and were growing increasingly anxious at the prospect of being dragged into the relegation dogfight. Their remaining two fixtures of the season are against Manchester City and Liverpool, so Hughton was naturally relieved that they will not need to get a result from those away matches.
“It's a relief, because even going into the game I felt that we have deserved to stay in this league for our season's work,” Hughton said. “But if we'd lost today and the next two, it would have been a real feeling of injustice had we gone down.”
Brighton were helped by a phenomenal performance from Anthony Knockaert, the winger who was at his twinkle-toed best in their final home game of the season. “He has had some fabulous games,” Hughton said. “That topped it tonight.”
FULL TIME
Superb from Brighton! A thoroughly deserved win over an absolutely abysmal Man Utd means they have secured Premier League football for another season. It's an incredible achievement for Chris Hughton and his players. Jose Mourinho will have hit new levels of frustration tonight - these players are hurting his reputation and there's little he can do about it.
90 mins
March comes on for Izquierdo. Ryan catches a Shaw cross (not Ryan Shawcross, but rather a cross by Shaw) at the near post... and this one is going to fizzle out. Brighton's tactics and performance has been superb here - helped by playing a United treating it like a friends-and-family day out but still impressive.
80 mins
I think Pogba is an absolutely superb player but he's been so poor for most of this season. There was a spell before injury where everything was working for him and yes, he's got 10 assists in the league but if you actually go into it and see how he's got them it'll put things in perspective. The best example is one of his assists to Lingard, where Pogba makes a short pass to him out on the left wing, then Lingard dribbled past three players and shot from 25 yards. That's not really an assist is it?
77 mins
Young lunges into Knockaert from behind while chasing the ball from behind and the Brighton man starts rolling around the floor. He's taken a wee hit to the ankle but he's fine. Players need to stop doing that. Please stop. They should teach children about that instead of a wolf and a boy crying about it, modernise it. Mix it up.
71 mins
Young has shifted to right-back, Lingard is playing close to Rashford. United pass the ball around the Brighton final third, moving it through the middle and Rashford finds a yard of space to line up a shot, takes it and forces Ryan into a strong save. That was flying towards the back of the net.
67 mins
Brighton counter-attack and win a corner. Knockaert is flying past defenders with ease, it's great to watch. He's just left Rojo looking quite the fool with quick feet and a burst of pace. The corner is blocked at first phase but second is blasted in and Izquierdo improvises his finish, knocking it wide of goal. Solid effort but not quite good enough.
62 mins
Brighton are all over Man Utd here. Knockaert dribbles his way into the box, twisting and turning and HE'S GONE DOWN! That must be a penalty. Must be! No! The referee looks for assistance from his assistant but none comes. Knockaert can't believe it. In the officials' defence, he was definitely looking for the foul but that shouldn't stop it actually being one.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!
Brighton have taken the lead! And it's deserved! Izquierdo gets down the left, is able to win the ball back after being tackled and crosses into the area. The header is attacked by Gross, he powers it at goal and Rojo blocks on the line! There's a rammy in the box and a few seconds later the referee blows his whistle. The watch of truth has revealed that the ball crossed the line!
54 mins
Gary Neville is angry that Fellaini keeps dropping deep, when really he should be up top waiting for the ball to be sent to him or taken there by the rest of his team. United keep trying short one-touch passes but after about three seem to lose confidence, or have any ideas left as to where it should go next. It's really disjointed. And Bruno has stolen the ball from near the halfway line, goes past Young, drives to the D and shoots but hits Smalling and wins a corner.
48 mins
No changes then. Pogba hasn't started much better than he ended the first half .
Murray goes into Fellaini with a slide tackle and scissors him (I want to say that in a different way but it's a liveblog and time sensitive), earning a booking. For just a second that looked like a bad one so it's good to see that's not the case. Fellaini up and moving fine.
Team shapes
I'd love to know what Mourinho is saying in the dressing room right now. I'd imagine a lot of it isn't fit for Ofcom standards but my god it would be entertaining.
Are you ready for more of this? They've been so disappointing that we haven't really mentioned how effective Brighton have been. Hughton must be the most underrated manager in the whole league.
38 mins
Brighton are pressing the United goalkicks and so De Gea decides to knock it long. Brighton are winning every 50/50, every duel and don't even have to work to gain possession since United players keep handing it to them!
Rashford is sent chasing a ball into the channel. The goalkeeper comes out to clear it... and Rashford gets their first! The goalkeeper then fouls him - clearly - but the referee doesn't care. The United players don't even seem to care. Wake up everyone!
33 mins
United are playing this game with all the concentrated determination of a pre-season friendly. Sloppy passes, no real effort... Rashford has been awful too. He's not trying to be but nothing he tries is working and even simple bits of control are letting him down.
The passing by United is the worst I've seen all season.
30 mins
Another long range shot from Izquierdo wins a corner and gets the Brighton fans singing in full voice. The corner is sent in and it's headed at goal at the near post! Just wide! United have got away with one there!
Mourinho is raging with Rashford. Geoff Shreeves says he didn't bother waiting until half time and during the last break said 'why didn't you square it to Martial?'
27 mins
Rashford is having a bit of a mare. He keeps giving the ball away, losing control of it and now he's been put clean in on goal by winning the ball in the Brighton box and taking far too long to decide what to do with it. Instead of setting up Martial for the tap in, he waits... and loses out as the defender gets tight to tackle.
Mourinho looks furious.
23 mins
There's a nice tempo to United's passing, they're not hanging about and are moving it around with purpose, but there's no real rhythm. Like they're hitting a drum a bunch of times hoping it'll sound good eventually. The problem is that as soon as they get into the final third, someone passes it to absolutely nobody.
The managers pre-match words
Jose Mourinho
"Alexis and Lukaku are injured so not an option. We believe in these players, they are fresher than many others and to play against a team which is strong at home, is intense is probably the best team."
Who's the number nine?
"All of them
"The final is in two weeks time, there is no energy to save, I think we did everything this season to be second best in the Premier League"
Chris Hughton
"We know the magnitude of what we're about to be up against but we wll have to play very well and they'll have to have one of their not-so-good days."
Players warming up
That won't take long in this warm sunny weather! [/badjokes]
Gary Neville has been out asking fans what they think Man Utd need to next season to challenge Man City and the general consensus appears to be to attack and entertain. Is Mourinho the man for that? His record breaking Chelsea teams, and high scoring Real Madrid side suggest he is! So where's the awesome football? Perhaps it starts tonight!
Good evening!
Hello and welcome to our liveblog for this Friday night football extravaganza, as two teams battle it out over mostly nothing! That's not strictly true, as technically Brighton could still be relegated but considering their position in the table and the five point gap they have over Southampton just now it doesn't seem likely.
Still, Chris Hughton's team should be the more motivated of the two and seeing as this a home game, they might have the psychological advantage! Then again, this is a Man Utd team managed by Jose Mourinho. What can we even expect!?
Until the teams are in we won't know for sure but you can bet your bottom dollar, or alternatively your lowest pound, that Mourinho will be gunning for an impressive victory here. The noises about Pep Guardiola's champions being so much more fun to watch can't sit easy with Jose.
