Govt schools put up a good show; pass percentage goes up to 98

The district jumped up from 11th slot to eighth slot in the State when the results of SSLC examination were announced on Thursday, with government schools significantly improving their performance compared to last year.

Deputy Director of Education E.K. Suresh Kumar told The Hindu that the pass percentage had gone up from 95 to 98 this time. As many as 4,120 students recorded A-Plus in all subjects compared to 2,100 students scoring the same last year. Of the total 210 schools, the number of those who recorded cent per cent pass too had gone up from 33 to 84.

“Many schools which had recorded 60% to 70% last time almost reached 99% this time. The special camps we ran to help weak students have borne fruit,” Mr. Suresh Kumar said.

The department had organised programmes like Vijayotsavam and Ganithotsav to improve the performance of students in subjects such as mathematics, social studies and Hindi. Late night camps and intensive programmes were organised for students who were found to be backward, especially in coastal areas.

This helped in areas such as the Vadakara educational district. Of the 15,418 students who wrote the examination, 15,267 cleared it, with 1,543 scoring A-Plus in all subjects.

The performance of the Kozhikode educational district was reportedly not up to the mark.

As many as 11 schools within the Kozhikode Corporation limits, considered to be elite in terms of the facilities they offer, could not record cent per cent result as one student each failed to clear the examination.

Eleven schools in the city scored cent per cent result. A total of 44,806 students wrote the examination in the district this year, of whom 43,896 cleared it. District Panchayat President Babu Parassery congratulated the students for their performance.
