Auto update

54 mins

Gary Neville is angry that Fellaini keeps dropping deep, when really he should be up top waiting for the ball to be sent to him or taken there by the rest of his team. United keep trying short one-touch passes but after about three seem to lose confidence, or have any ideas left as to where it should go next. It's really disjointed. And Bruno has stolen the ball from near the halfway line, goes past Young, drives to the D and shoots but hits Smalling and wins a corner.

51 mins

Pogba and Mata get in each others' way, Pogba manages to keep control of the ball in Brighton's box and then attempts a no-look shot to the bottom corner, feigning the opposite way. The goalkeeper doesn't buy it.

48 mins

No changes then. Pogba hasn't started much better than he ended the first half .

Murray goes into Fellaini with a slide tackle and scissors him (I want to say that in a different way but it's a liveblog and time sensitive), earning a booking. For just a second that looked like a bad one so it's good to see that's not the case. Fellaini up and moving fine.

KICK OFF 2

We're back! Oh dear.

Team shapes

Brighton left, Man Utd right

I'd love to know what Mourinho is saying in the dressing room right now. I'd imagine a lot of it isn't fit for Ofcom standards but my god it would be entertaining.

Are you ready for more of this? They've been so disappointing that we haven't really mentioned how effective Brighton have been. Hughton must be the most underrated manager in the whole league.

I can't wait to see the player ratings

De Gea's done well, Brighton have been excellent. Everyone else would be on a three or four, it's baffling. They're playing like it's 5 a side and doesn't really matter.

HALF TIME

Woeful. That is one of the worst, most inept Man Utd performances I've seen all season, if not over the last few years. If Mourinho could make 10 substitutions, I genuinely think he might use them.

45 mins

Bong has injured himself during that corner a bit earlier and may have to go off. Mourinho has the expression of someone waiting for their partner to finish trying on clothes in Debenhams so they can do literally anything else.

43 mins

United win a corner. Rashford comes over to take it aaaaaaaand it's cleared at the near post. Ryan comes out to catch the second ball chipped into the area.

Pogba comes forward, Brighton back off and get into a 5-4-1 shape and none of it matters because Pogba chips the ball out for a throw-in. This is honestly awful. Appalling.

38 mins

Brighton are pressing the United goalkicks and so De Gea decides to knock it long. Brighton are winning every 50/50, every duel and don't even have to work to gain possession since United players keep handing it to them!

Rashford is sent chasing a ball into the channel. The goalkeeper comes out to clear it... and Rashford gets their first! The goalkeeper then fouls him - clearly - but the referee doesn't care. The United players don't even seem to care. Wake up everyone!

36 mins

Another dreadful pass gives Knockaert the chance to break. He gets onto the return of a one-two but can't nick it past the goalkeeper. Corner.

The first ball is dealt with, the second phase of attack isn't and a hooked clearance gets the thing away from danger.

33 mins

United are playing this game with all the concentrated determination of a pre-season friendly. Sloppy passes, no real effort... Rashford has been awful too. He's not trying to be but nothing he tries is working and even simple bits of control are letting him down.

The passing by United is the worst I've seen all season.

30 mins

Another long range shot from Izquierdo wins a corner and gets the Brighton fans singing in full voice. The corner is sent in and it's headed at goal at the near post! Just wide! United have got away with one there!

Mourinho is raging with Rashford. Geoff Shreeves says he didn't bother waiting until half time and during the last break said 'why didn't you square it to Martial?'

27 mins

Rashford is having a bit of a mare. He keeps giving the ball away, losing control of it and now he's been put clean in on goal by winning the ball in the Brighton box and taking far too long to decide what to do with it. Instead of setting up Martial for the tap in, he waits... and loses out as the defender gets tight to tackle.

Mourinho looks furious.

Dunk throws his head at a powerful shot by Rashford and the crowd goes 'OOOOOOOOOO' because they heard it. That must have hurt... but he seems to be fine.

23 mins

There's a nice tempo to United's passing, they're not hanging about and are moving it around with purpose, but there's no real rhythm. Like they're hitting a drum a bunch of times hoping it'll sound good eventually. The problem is that as soon as they get into the final third, someone passes it to absolutely nobody.

20 mins

WHAT A SHOT BY MURRAY! The ball bounces about 25 yards out from goal and sits up perfectly for the power strike, Murray obliges and launches an effort which just keeps going! De Gea uses his size and strong arm to push that behind. The corner comes to nothing.

19 mins

Matic and Fellaini are dropping back at goal kicks to double team Murray, who keeps winning the aerial battles. United keep giving the ball away in the Brighton half, there's a bit of miscommunication and not enough understanding between them.

16 mins

Brighton get really tight and compact as United venture into their half and very quickly there's no space for them to pass into. Pogba forces a ball into Mata but the Spaniard slips and it's behind for a goal kick.

14 mins

Izquierdo moves inside the pitch from the left and finds Gross. He approaches the box then tries a low hard drive at goal but De Gea saves easily. Darmian isn't having a very good game so far and Brighton are targeting him.

12 mins

Brighton have found their groove and are starting to ask questions of the United defence. Izquierdo is able to cut onto his right foot inside the box and shoot but can only hit a defender.

9 mins

Bruno gets in behind Pogba on the right and chips to the back post, but Murray can't get a shot on target. Stephens comes in at the edge of the box but his shot is harmless and rolls wide of the post.

7 mins

Well that's an interesting one. A long ball over the top puts Smalling in a race with Murray and both of them go down, tangling in each others' legs. They have a laugh about it afterwards - there's a real feel of end-of-season friendly about this match.

5 mins

All United so far. They're keeping the ball well - or were until I wrote that and Rashford's first touch gives possession away. Brighton then win a free-kick and have a chance to keep the ball for a bit.

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAA - OFFSIDE

Rashford goes low towards the far post, Fellaini connects and it's turned into the back of the net! Fellaini did so from an offside position and Brighton survive an early scare.

3 mins

After an attacking start by Man Utd, Rashford is wiped out on the edge of the box and wins a free-kick. Rashford is lining this up for a shot.

Here come the players!

I'm enjoying Sky Sports' access to the pitch. The presenters and pundits are allowed to wander all around the pitch and stand next to the tunnel as the players come out.

The managers pre-match words

Jose Mourinho

"Alexis and Lukaku are injured so not an option. We believe in these players, they are fresher than many others and to play against a team which is strong at home, is intense is probably the best team."

Who's the number nine?

"All of them

"The final is in two weeks time, there is no energy to save, I think we did everything this season to be second best in the Premier League"

Chris Hughton

"We know the magnitude of what we're about to be up against but we wll have to play very well and they'll have to have one of their not-so-good days."

Players warming up

That won't take long in this warm sunny weather! [/badjokes]

Gary Neville has been out asking fans what they think Man Utd need to next season to challenge Man City and the general consensus appears to be to attack and entertain. Is Mourinho the man for that? His record breaking Chelsea teams, and high scoring Real Madrid side suggest he is! So where's the awesome football? Perhaps it starts tonight!

What a lovely evening

The sun is shining, it's still pretty warm, a giant anthropomorphic seagull is wandering around the stadium terrifying the supporters. What a Friday.

Man Utd starting lineup

Romelu Lukaku is out with a foot injury, Marouane Fellaini starts ahead of Scott McTominay and Alexis Sanchez isn't even in the squad!

Good evening!

Hello and welcome to our liveblog for this Friday night football extravaganza, as two teams battle it out over mostly nothing! That's not strictly true, as technically Brighton could still be relegated but considering their position in the table and the five point gap they have over Southampton just now it doesn't seem likely.

Still, Chris Hughton's team should be the more motivated of the two and seeing as this a home game, they might have the psychological advantage! Then again, this is a Man Utd team managed by Jose Mourinho. What can we even expect!?

Until the teams are in we won't know for sure but you can bet your bottom dollar, or alternatively your lowest pound, that Mourinho will be gunning for an impressive victory here. The noises about Pep Guardiola's champions being so much more fun to watch can't sit easy with Jose.

Team news should be with us at 7pm and you can follow all the build-up and action with us right here on this very internet website page.
