NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. — A Freedom Area Middle School student placed third in a statewide Talk to Your State Senator video competition.

Norina Baker was among middle- and high-school students across Pennsylvania who wanted to be involved in legislative efforts to fight heroin and opioid abuse, according to a press release from State Senator Elder Vogel Jr.’s office, R-47, New Sewickley Township.

The competition was sponsored by the state Senate with support from members of the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers Organization of Pennsylvania.

“This contest has enabled us to enlist the help of young people in our schools who have witnessed firsthand the negative impact that drugs can have on individuals,” Vogel said in a prepared statement.

Baker will receive a $1,000 reward, which will be deposited into a TAP 529 college savings account in her name. Her video and other winning submissions can be viewed at www.acommonwealthcrisis.com.
