A German nurse working for the International Committee of the Red Cross was abducted when armed gunmen stormed into the relief agency's compound in Somalia's capital, the aid group said Wednesday.
The abduction occurred around 8 pm local time in Mogadishu, the ICRC said in a release.
"We are deeply concerned about the safety of our colleague," Daniel O'Malley, ICRC's deputy head of delegation for Somalia said. "She is a nurse who was working every day to save lives and improve the health of some of Somalia's most vulnerable people."
The ICRC said it has been contact with various authorities.
In late March, a Red Cross staffer died of his injuries after a bomb attached to his vehicle exploded near the organization's office in Mogadishu. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for that attack.
On Tuesday, a World Health Organization a logistics officer for polio vaccinations was shot dead in the Somali capital. No one has claimed responsibility.
Last October, nearly 300 people were killed in two truck bombings in Mogadishu. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said five volunteers were among the dead.
