Howard Kurth, 85, died Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at United Church of Monticello, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Pastor Jean Sullivan will officiate. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Honors Team. Goettsch Funeral Home has been entrusted with Howard's care and services. The family suggests casual attire. Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa.
Surviving are his wife, Marie; four children, Diane (Doug) Monck, Cheryl (Jim) Hunt, Kevin (Diane) Kurth and Donald (Kay) Kurth; six grandchildren, Joshua Monck, James (Amy) Kurth, Derek (Nicole) Kurth, Jordan Kurth, Kelly Satre and Rich Hunt; two great-grandsons, Kavan and Koen Kurth; his siblings, Betty (Bill) Boyles, Paul (Linda) Kurth, James (Laurel) Kurth, Kenneth (Glenda) Kurth, Carolyn (Paul ) Krob, Kathyrn Hankemeier, Michael (Dawn) Kurth and Ernest (Kim) Kurth; sisters-in-law, Tony Kurth and Marge Kurth; a special aunt, Helen Kurth; special friends, Don and Janet Main, Gene Bray, Carl Petry and Bob Walker; and his many military friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Neva, and infant brother, Donald; and brothers, Bob, Albert and Carl.
Howard Boyce Kurth was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Olin, Iowa. He was the son of Howard and Mary Cole Kurth. Howard attended school in Buck Creek and Monticello before he graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools in 1951. He worked at Michels Garage and Van Alstene Garage before he served in the U.S. Army. Howard was a Korean War veteran, serving from 1953 to 1955. He returned from service and married Marie Frasher on Dec. 7, 1957, at Monticello Congregational Church. He then started his 35-and-a-half-year career with Iowa Electric, retiring in 1991. For 20 years, he and Marie wintered in Louisiana or Texas.
In retirement, he did electrical work at Camp Courageous and at the Congregational Church. He rebuilt and repaired many old tractors, and still owned his original John Deere D, bought in 1955. He also rebuilt a Model T and Model A.
