Assistant Sub-Inspector sustains multiple fractures

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) on duty at a police barricade was allegedly hit by a luxury car in the small hours of Wednesday in south Delhi’s Panchsheel, the police said.

They said the accused, 21-year-old BBA student Harsh Vardhan, was allegedly drunk and on the way back from a party at the time of the incident. ASI Harender has sustained multiple fractures and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre, the police said.

To avoid alcohol test

“The ASI was on night duty and flagged down the speeding car. However, the driver tried to flee in order to avoid an alcohol test. He lost control of the vehicle and ran over the constable. The driver was arrested on the spot,” said a senior police officer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya said, “The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. The luxury car was being driven by Mr. Vardhan. He first hit Mr. Harender and then rammed a barricade. Mr. Harender has suffered fractures in the leg and hand.”

The police said one of the policemen present at the spot pulled the accused out of the car while the rest rushed to Mr. Harender’s aid. They said the car had another passenger, identified as Shobhit.

The injured policeman was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre. The police said both Mr. Vardhan and Mr. Shobhit were drunk at the time of the incident.

“The duo was taken to a hospital for medical examination. The report confirmed that they were heavily drunk at the time of the accident,” said Mr. Baaniya.

The police said a case under Sections 279 (punishment for rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC and 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act has been registered against Mr. Vardhan.
