Nicola Sturgeon has admitted there is no British safety standard specifically for baby boxes but launched an angry tirade at the Tories for “needlessly trying to frighten parents” over the flagship policy.
The First Minister told MSPs that there was no recognised safety checklist for the items but argued they comply with parts of one covering cribs and cradles, including criteria covering strength and stability.
In an extraordinary monologue directed at Miles Briggs, the Scottish Tories’ Shadow Health Minister, she even raised the so-called “rape clause” row around child tax credits to rebut his questions about the boxes’ safety.
