Kellogg shares rise after earnings beat expectations, outlook raised

Kellogg Co. shares rose 4.1% in Thursday premarket trading after the food company reported first-quarter earnings and sales that beat expectations and a guidance increase. Net income totaled $444 million, or $1.27 per share, up from $266 million, or 75 cents per share, the previous year. Currency-neutral adjusted EPS was $1.19. Revenue totaled $3.4 billion, up from $3.2 billion last year. The FactSet consensus was for EPS of $1.08 and revenue of $3.3 billion. Kellogg credited improving sales on growth in U.S. frozen foods and global Pringles and said it made progress to stabilize Special K in key markets. On May 2, Kellogg expanded its business partnership with Tolaram in West Africa with an additional $420 million investment. "Expansion in emerging markets is an important element of our growth strategy," said Steve Cahillane, Kellogg's chief executive. The company updated its guidance and now expects 3% to 4% net sales growth, and 9% to 11% adjusted EPS growth, both on a currency-neutral basis. Kellogg shares are down 16.7% for the year to date, while the S&P 500 index is down 1.4% for the period.

Kellogg to raise quarterly dividend by 3.7%, next quarter

Kellogg Co. said Friday it plans to raise its quarterly dividend by 3.7% to 56 cents a share in the third quarter, after paying out a regular second-quarter dividend of 54 cents a share on June 15, to shareholders for record on June 1. The branded foods company's stock, which was still inactive in premarket trade, closed Thursday at a six-month low of $60.10. At that price, the current dividend yield is 3.59%, while the third-quarter dividend would imply a yield of 3.73%. That compares with the current payout yield for the SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ETF of 2.97% and the implied yield for the S&P 500 of 1.95%, according to FactSet. Kellogg's stock has slumped 12% over the past three months, while the consumer staples ETF as tumbled 14% and the S&P 500 has shed 7.2%.

Consumer-staples sector rallies as food companies jump

The consumer-staples sector rallied on Wednesday, helping to support the overall equity market as a number of major food companies led the industry higher. The sector rose 0.9, the top performer among S&P 500 sectors. The group was supported by food companies, with Hormel Foods Corp. up 5.3% and Tyson Foods Inc. gaining 2.3%. Campbell Soup Co. rose 2% while Kellogg Co. was up 1.9%. Coca-Cola Co. rose 0.7%, but the size of the Dow component provided an outsize lift to the sector overall. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% while the S&P 500 was down 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 0.1%. Broader indexes were pressured by concerns over a potential trade war between the U.S. and China.

General Mills to raise food prices to offset costs

General Mills Inc. will raise prices on some cereals and snacks to reflect higher ingredient and shipping costs, as food companies battle inflationary pressures that are eating into profits. The maker of Cheerios cereal and Yoplait yogurt said freight costs in North America were near 20-year highs in February and food prices were also higher than expected, prompting the conglomerate to lower its earnings expectations for the year.
