Dharwad: Senior JD(S) leader
Nizamuddin Sheikh has urged election officials to ensure that no candidate seeks votes in the name of caste and religion.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he alleged that Congress candidate from Hubballi-Dharwad West Ismail
Tamatgar was making moulvis urge the community members to vote for him in violation of the model code of conduct. “Tamatgar after ensuring that there is no Muslim candidate against him from Janata Dal(S) is now intimidating independent Muslim candidates in the fray and pressurizing them to retire from the contest. The community members supporting independent candidate Maktum Sogalad are being threatened by Ismail’s supporters,” Sheikh alleged.
Meanwhile, JD(U) candidate Javed Amhad Belgaumkar has filed a complaint with the Election Commission and at Suburban police station here against Tamatgar. Belgaumkar alleged that the supporters of Ismail threatened him of dire consequences if he did not retire from the contest.
He further said that supporters of Ismail ransacked his house when he refused to budge. Belgaumkar also sought protection for him and his family.
