SOMERSET — It’s not all about winning.

While Old Rochester came to town on Tuesday with far too much high-quality depth for Somerset Berkley to overcome, the undefeated Bulldogs also pushed Raider athletes to new heights.

The previously undefeated Raiders (3-1) had a half-dozen athletes post personal records in their 92-43 loss to Old Rochester in South Coast Conference girls’ track and field at SBR.

“I’m more proud of the PRs than the score,” SBR coach Danielle Cote said. “We knew they’d be very strong. It’s tough to lose, but I’d rather see (the Raiders) make achievements.”

Somerset Berkley took five first places, but in four of those five instances, the Bulldogs took second and third place. ORR swept the triple jump and went 1-2 in four other events.

Somerset Berkley’s best-scoring event was the shot put, where junior Kathleen Martin (30 feet, 5 inches) and Sarah Fitzgerald (26-7) finished 1-3.

Junior Kathryn Sullivan won two events, the long jump (16-1.5) and the 100-meter hurdles, where her 15.4 is believed to have established a school hand-held time record. The previous co-holders at 15.9 were Kerri Lyons (1998) and Rachel Smith (2003).

McKenzie Offley won the high jump at 4-10, and Fiona Lyons won the mile in 6:12.

Among the notable times posted by ORR athletes was Meg Hughes’ cruise-to-first-place 59.6 in the 400 meters. She was the state champion in that event a year ago.

This was SBR’s third dual meet in eight days, and many of the Raiders top athletes had competed in the State Relays on Sunday.
