Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham will be remade into a TV show.

If you thought grand family sagas were a thing of past, here’s a news that will jolt you back to reality - Karan Johar’s 2001 film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham will soon be made into a TV series. The film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Kajol and Jaya Bachchan in lead roles.

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, Ekta Kapoor is making the TV adaptation of the hit film. It quoted a source as saying, “Bijoy Anand, who played Kajol’s wayward fiancé in the 1998 romcom Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha, has been cast to play Amitabh Bachchan’s patriarch, Yashvardhan Raichand, while Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi actress Erica Fernandes is in talks to play either Kajol’s talkative Anjali or her younger sister, Pooja (popularised by Kareena as ‘Poo’). The part will be finalised after a look test.”

Bijoy Anand will play Amitabh’s role from the film, Yashvardhan Raichand.

Ekta had recently posted a tweet hinting at the project. She wrote, “A family soap after years !!! Mostly done love stories recently with d backdrop of family!! This soap will air on SONY ...a family that eats together stays together NOOOO a family that accepts each other stays together.”

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was the story of a two sons , one of them being adopted. The family breaks apart, only to come back together and realising that bonds of love are no less strong than those of blood. Kareena played Hrithik’s love interest while Kajol was SRK’s onscreen wife in the movie that also featured Rani Mukerji in a guest appearance.

Ekta has been focussing on her digital platform, Alt Balaji of late. Recent reports claim she plans a fantasy drama series for the platform on the lines of Game of Thrones. A Bollywoodlife report quoted a source as saying, “Though not an official adaption, the project will have the feel and look of the medieval drama. It will have a heavy dose of sex in it.”
