SriLanka: 8 new State Ministers and 10 new Deputy Ministers sworn in as part of reshuffle within govt |
In Sri Lanka, 8 new State Ministers and 10 new Deputy Ministers were sworn in today as part of the reshuffle within the government.
President Maithripala Sirisena had changed cabinet portfolios of 18 ministers yesterday as part of fourth cabinet reshuffle within his government.
National unity government has maintained that the reshuffle is being carried out on scientific basis along with realignment of departments and ministries.
Opposition led by former President Mahinda Rajapakse has however asserted that the changes are cosmetic and demanded for government’s resignation to call for fresh elections. The unity government of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, SLFP and the United National Party, UNP was thrown into a crisis after former president Mahinda Rajapakse’s Joint opposition group won local elections held in February.
The Rajapakse camp is pushing for a snap parliamentary election which are scheduled in August 2020. However the next election due is the presidential election which must be called by November 2019.
