8 critically ill get new lease of life

Mumbai: In a span of 36 hours, the city witnessed three cadaver organ donations that saved the lives of eight critically ill patients.

The first organ donation took place around 3 a.m. on May 1, and two other cadaver donations followed soon after.

According to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), a 22-year-old man who suffered severe brain injury in a road accident was declared brain dead at the Umrao Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road. His family consented to donate his organs, and his heart, liver and kidneys were retrieved.

In the second case, a 45-year-old man was declared brain dead and his family consented to donate his liver and kidneys.

The last instance was of a 67-year-old patient, whose liver was donated at Jaslok Hospital.

With this, the number of cadaver organ donations has touched 18. Last year, the city has recorded 58 cadaver organ donations.

A counsellor at a private hospital said many families are now aware about the concept of organ donation. “When we approach the families for consent, we realise that most family members have an idea about organ donation and how it can help in saving lives of patients.”
