Independence
Mary K. Tarpy, 81, of Independence, Iowa, died Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Lexington Estates in Independence.
She was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Petersburg, Iowa, the daughter of Lavern C. and Olga E. (Koopman) VonLehmden. Her family lived in New Vienna, Iowa, and in 1940 they moved to Independence and she attended Westburg No. 7 school in rural Independence. She was a 1955 graduate of St. John's Catholic High School in Independence.
On May 20, 1958, she married the love of her life, Frank Robert Tarpy, at St. John's Catholic Church and they made their home in Independence. Mary started working as a teller at Security State Bank in Independence in 1955 and later became a bank officer and after 40 years she retired in 1995.
She loved to travel with her husband, Frank. Throughout their years together they took trips for family vacations, snowmobiling with their children and friends and going to pick up cars for Dunlap Motors. Mary and Frank frequently followed their favorite bands around northeast Iowa to go dancing.
Mary is survived by her two sons, Lavern (Renee) Tarpy, Independence, and Mark (Janet) Tarpy, Independence; six grandchildren, Serena (Mike) Zwanziger, Carrie Tarpy, Melissa (Andy) Trumbauer, Jason Tarpy, Taryn Tarpy and Troy Tarpy; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Myah Zwanziger and Riley and Bentley Trumbauer; a sister, Lois Doyle, Cedar Rapids; a brother-in-law, Leroy Thoma, Deforest, Wis.; and two sisters-in-law, Jan Von Lehmden, Independence, and Betty VonLehmden, Rowley, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lavern and Olga VonLehmden; her husband, Frank Tarpy; two brothers, John and Tom VonLehmden; and a sister, Agnes Thoma.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, with the Rev. Paul McManus presiding. Burial will be held at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A rosary service will be held at 3 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at
7 p.m. Thursday.
