We knew the second we saw Octavia's (Marie Avgeropoulos) fighting pit on The 100 that there was some bad sh** coming our way. Tuesday's episode, "Red Queen," told us the story of how the bunker went from a refuge from Praimfaya to Gladiator in six years, and the journey included one final act of martyrdom by former chancellor Jaha (Isaiah Washington).

Once the tower collapsed, trapping everyone inside the bunker with no foreseeable way out, it became evident that they didn't have the essentials for the entire population to survive anything longer than the predicted five years in the bunker. (Have these people ever gone more than three months without encountering a new threat of humanity's extinction?!?)

With the prospect of population reduction on the horizon, Skaikru member Kara Cooper (Kyra Zagorsky) led an uprising against Octavia, taking the bunker's farm for Skaikru with the plan of starving the other clans to death. Normally, we'd automatically hate someone who bursts onto the scene with genocide on her mind, but seeing as Kara saved Kane (Henry Ian Cusick) and Abby (Paige Turco) and she had already lost her father and husband to population reduction, we'll put off our final judgment for now. But Kara, you're on final notice!

Speaking of people who have the blood of hundreds on their hands, during the uprising Jaha suffered a fatal stab wound. The news didn't come as too much of a shock to anyone who saw the announcement that Washington wouldn't be a series regular this season, but that didn't mean that the show didn't do a good job of sending him off in a memorable fashion.

Knowing this would be it for him, Jaha used his last hours alive to help Octavia quell the rebellion by working his techno-magic to open up the sealed doors to the farm. But Jaha wouldn't be Jaha without taking this opportunity to grandstand. Before opening the doors, Jaha forced Octavia -- literally forced, she wanted no part of this -- to listen to him expound on about the complicated politics of leadership and the necessity of creating an enemy to unite one's people against.

Octavia got the message and so began the bunker's new mantra: "You are Wonkru or you are the enemy of Wonkru." Anyone who dared defy this line of thinking was promptly slaughtered by Octavia, whose bloody show of strength killed the clan rivalries as well. Octavia managed to take back the farm and unite Wonkru in one fell swoop, and she had Jaha of all people to thank for it.

After her victory, Octavia, Kane and Abby ran to Jaha's side, where the fallen leader was barely hanging on. As his dying wish, Jaha asked Octavia to take care of Ethan (Beckham Skodje), a young boy whose father was not lucky enough to be chosen as part of the bunker lottery. It'll be interesting to see how much of a part Ethan will play in the present-day story, as he'll have aged into his teens by the time we next see the bunker, but based on how Octavia interpreted Jaha's other dying wish, we don't have much faith in her.

While Jaha died helping prevent another radical population reduction, that sacrifice means little knowing that Octavia then took this opportunity to create a fighting pit. But we aren't sad for what this means for Jaha's legacy; what breaks our hearts is what this means for Octavia, who seems so far gone into this darkness that she is comfortable sitting back and watching her ally Kane be forced into the pit to fight for his life.

So rather than walking away from this episode mourning Jaha (who was, let's be honest, a huge jerk most of the time), we're just consumed with worry over our dear Kane. Now that would be a death that would hurt.
