Ask an expert: Sardinia

Colourful Bosa sits about 40km south of Alghero on Sardinia's west coast.
Q. I am going to spend six days in Sardinia in mid-September. We will travel from mainland Italy with a car by ferry and want to spend time at accessible white beaches as well as old towns. We don't want to spend all week driving so would prefer to pick two hotels and stay three nights at each. Can you recommend a plan?
A. Depending on your Italian plans, it may be worth flying into Sardinia and hiring a car there, giving you an extra two days to explore the island. This will also cost less when compared to transporting a car to and from the mainland.
With nearly 2000 kilometres of coastline, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches and charming seaside villages. If you fly into Alghero, spend some time in Bosa, a pretty little town with a collection of pastel-coloured houses. Check out the Sa Costa District on foot which is the town's historical centre. Stay for the day but especially for sunset which is spectacular. The best photos are usually taken from around the marina area.
Alghero itself is very picturesque. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria in the city's main piazza is modelled after a church in Barcelona. From here you can enjoy day trips all along the west coast.
There is a beautiful beach north of Stintino called La Pelosa Beach and the carpark is right alongside it. Make sure you stop off and try some mirto, which is a local liqueur made from myrtle plants (maybe not the driver!).
Just around the corner from Stintino is Castelsardo where the fortified castle, Castello dei Doria, dominates. There are a series of narrow laneways in the town below with very good handmade craft stalls. There are a number of gorgeous beaches nearby as well.
I hope this helps, and you have a fantastic time in stunning Sardinia.
