Perhaps the Mid-American Conference might consider naming its Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor the Matt Ludwig Award.

That’s because for the sixth time this season — indoor and outdoor — the University of Akron pole vaulter was named the conference’s Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. It’s the second time the Lake Catholic graduate has been honored during the outdoor season. He won the honor four times during indoor.

On April 28, Ludwig, the reigning outdoor NCAA champion, won the pole vault at the LSU Invitational with an effort of 18 feet, 6.75 inches. He won the event with some heavy hitters among a field that included nationally ranked athletes, such as Texas A&M’s Audie Wyatt (ranked No. 5) and Jacob Wooten (14).

During the indoor season, Ludwig earned first-team All-America honors with a fourth-placed finish at the NCAA Division I Championships. He also won the MAC championship in the event, and placed first in seven of nine indoor events.

The Zips host the Campbell/Wright Invitational May 4-5, then seek to defend their MAC outdoor title a week later.
