Veere Di Wedding first song Tareefan puts the focus on Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

The first song from Veere Di Wedding, Tareefan, could not have had more style if it tried. It has Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor – undoubtedly two of the most stylish female actors in the industry today, Badshah singing (which is different from Badshah rapping) and clothes so stylish – to use a cliché – that vaginas might burst. The club mood of the song, Kareena and Sonam grooving and we have all the upcoming veere di weddings covered. Well, it would be a refreshing change from the shaadi ka gaana we have seen till now and we are not complaining.

The important part is that male gaze gets subverted as Kareena and Sonam take up the roles normally defined as ‘male’ in Tareefan. The song has been sung by Badshah and composed by by Qaran Mehta. In the choreography department, Farah Khan is doing the honours. The choreographer-turned-director has become extremely choosy in the projects she picks up but made an exception for Veere Di Wedding.

Farah earlier said in a statement about the song, “This is the second music video that I have conceptualised after Bluffmaster’s Ek Main Aur Ek Tu Hai. We’ve taken this song to the next level. The concept of a gender swap really appealed to me, so we made the boys the decorative pieces in the song, with the girls being the heroes. It was fun working with some truly empowered and enlightened women like Rhea (Kapoor), Ekta (Kapoor), Kareena, Sonam, Swara and Shikha.”

Kareena plays the main character in the film -- Kalindi, a woman who is getting married, though she is yet to come to terms with the conditions of commitments and emotional baggage attached with a traditional Indian wedding. Sonam, Swara Bhaskar and Shika Talsania play her close friends. Sumeet Vyas also features in the movie.

Earlier, talking at the film’s trailer launch, Sonam had said, “We are hoping this film does well. It is important for this film to do well so that we as women will get our space. We can break the glass in some way or the other.”

The film has been shot across Delhi, Mumbai and Phuket. Choreographer Farah Khan has worked on a song for the film that also features Punjabi rapper Badshah. Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, it will hit the screens on June 1.
