The Nelson Farmers Market Cooperative is opening for the season with live music and lots of local produce, plants and more, beginning 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday in Nellysford.
Hannah Velie, market manager, said Monday the market has on average 45 producers under the white tent at 3079 Rockfish Valley Highway. Producers will have fresh local produce, baked goods, fresh cheese, meats and poultry, local honey, jams, fine crafts, plants and cut flowers, among other items, Velie said, adding local band 2Wishes will perform live from 9 a.m. until noon.
“They played a couple of times last year and they were a big hit,” Velie said.
Heather Coiner, co-owner at Little Hat Creek Farm in Roseland, will be among the vendors. Coiner said this will be the farm’s fifth year selling at the market. Little Hat Creek Farm will offer vegetable, herb and flower plants for gardening; fresh kale and spinach; and baked goods such as bread, scones and pastries.
“I love this market,” Coiner said. “It’s my favorite market to sell out of; the community and goodwill at the Nelson Market are what keeps us motivated to do what we do. I am very much looking forward to it... I am looking forward to seeing my customers, the other vendors and all the friends we have at market.”
Another vendor is Ennis Mountain Woods Inc. Lynn Bailey said she and her husband Don Bailey, who designs and works with wood, will be guest vendors this season, including this Saturday. Lynn Bailey said Monday they sell small gift items at the market such as boxes, hand mirrors and vases.
“I like this market; they have music every week under a tent,” she said.
Although many vendors accept credit or debit cards, Velie said cash is also good to bring. For more information, email nelsonfarmersmarketmanager@gmail.com or visit nelsonfarmersmarket.org.
