LDF councillors blockade Mayor

Ro-ro launched without necessary preparation, alleges opposition

Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors blockaded Mayor Soumini Jain in her chamber on May Day demanding the immediate resumption of the recently launched ro-ro service and an emergency council meeting to discuss the issue.

Later, the Opposition councillors called off their protest after the Mayor agreed to call an emergency council meeting, claimed a release issued by LDF Parliamentary Party secretary V.P. Chandran here on Wednesday.

The councillors launched the protest in front of the corporation office after the operation of the ro-ro service, introduced at a cost of ₹16 crore, were suspended on the inaugural day itself. The Opposition members alleged that the service through the dangerous shipping channel was launched by the civic body without proper preparation.

The Opposition said the protest was against the “illegal and irresponsible” action of the Mayor that resulted in the suspension of the service on the very first day for want of necessary documents. The protest was called off after the Mayor signed a notice convening an emergency council meeting on Saturday.
