Indore: Leaving behind country’s major metro cities, Indore region registered phenomenal growth of 34.90 percent in income tax collection in last financial year that ended on March 31, 2018. It was followed by Mumbai and Hyderabad CC I-T region. Indore region now has 10 lakh tax payers of which 2.11 lakh are new tax payers. Indore region includes 16 districts of Indore and Ujjain revenue divisions.
Ajay Kumar Chouhan, chief commissioner of income tax Indore region, on Tuesday said that the gross tax collection was Rs 2,760 crore and after making refund of Rs 503 crore, net tax collection stood at Rs 2,257 crore, which is more than 34 percent of the total tax collected in 2016-17.
Giving break-up of tax collection, Chouhan said that the personal income tax collection went up by 26.70 percent, which was Rs 1,218 crore in 2017-18. The corporate tax collection was Rs 1,038 crore, which registered rise of 45.89 percent. It was Rs 711 crore in 2016-2017.
The success of Indore region has become more important as this was the maiden year of rolling out of Goods and Services Tax and also the second year of demonetisation. The financial experts had predicted that both moves would weaken the economy. According to Chouhan, the national growth rate of tax collection stood at 18.5% in the period under review. Chouhan gave credit to his team and the initiatives including Aaykar Sangrahan Yojana launched for tax payers, which yielded positive results.
104 surveys and 22 recoveries
In the financial year that ended on March 31, 2018, the department conducted highest number of 104 surveys and unearthed unaccounted income some of Rs 109 crore and collected tax worth Rs 30 crore. Similarly, highest number of 22 recovery surveys was conducted. A sum of Rs 6 crore was collected from these surveys. Recovery surveys are conducted against those whom the tax collection is due.
55 prosecution cases
For the first time, 55 prosecution cases were filed by the department against tax evaders. Besides, two defaulters were arrested.
