Minister for Revenue and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, on Tuesday, inaugurated the Salvador do Mundo panchayat office at its new premises at the multi-purpose complex near the Saviour of the World church.

The multipurpose complex is being constructed by the GSIDC at an estimated cost of Rs 34 crore; the state-of-the-art complex comprises an air-conditioned hall, gymnasium, badminton court, boxing ring, tennis court, pharmacy, indoor games facility, canteen facility, football ground and thirteen shops.

Speaking at the function, Khaunte said, “We should not look at the panchayat ghar as an office. It should have different services for the people of the locality such as bank, bank ATM, pharmacy, different shops, clinic etc all under one roof.

Speaking further, he said that boxing ring and tennis court are amongst the facilities being provided at the multipurpose complex, and added that this will benefit the locals.

“The expansion of the ground will take 2 to 3 months to complete. With the football and cricket grounds having turf and floodlit facilities, it will be possible to hold second and third division football games,” he said.

“The facilities of  international standard will encourage the local talent to compete at the national level. The village panchayat will have to generate revenue to maintain the complex,” he added.

Meanwhile, Porvorim MLA said that “the inauguration of the complex will be held in a couple of months once the Chief Minister comes back. This is to reciprocate the help given by the Chief Minister in building this state-of-the-art complex at Salvador do Mundo.”

Sarpanch of Salvador do Mundo, Sandeep  Salgaonkar, told the gathering that “the village  panchayat office was functioning in a 50 sq mt area since 1963. There was no place  to keep the records. We had to work in a small area. Even gram sabhas used to be held in school building. This new panchayat premises will have all the facilities for the benefit the locals. The multipurpose complex will be inaugurated after 3 months. On the occasion of inauguration, all the ex-sarpanchas will be facilitated.”
