Indore: The police on Tuesday booked an assistant professor of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College who has been charged with rape of a student of an Ayurvedic college. The victim told police that the assistant professor exploited her physically for 11 months by promising to marry her. He refused to marry her when she insisted on marriage.
Bhawarkuan police station registered a zero FIR (FIR that can be filed in any police station regardless of the place of incident or jurisdiction) and then transferred the case to Sanyogitaganj police station. According to police, the 25-year old girl lodged a complaint with Bhanwarkuan police station against Dr Basant Nigwal who stays in PG hostel in Chhawani. He is a native of Dhamnod.
“The accused and victim became friends through Facebook in April 2017. Accused had also taken the victim to Dhamnod and had fooled her by putting mangalsutra to pacify her. The victim learnt about the engagement of the accused on April 25 after which she approached the police and lodged a complaint,” sub inspector CS Chauhan said.
Dr Basant Nigwal is assistant professor in anesthesia department of MGM Medical College. He has been sent to Khandwa Medical College on deputation. Nigwal returned to Indore after taking leave from the college. Police have begun investigation into the matter.

“We will take action against Dr Nigwal only on the basis of police action. Police will send us in writing about the case and its status after which we will act accordingly,” dean of MGM Medical College Dr Sharad Thora said.
