The clock ticked slowly, the time almost suspended. In the Eternal City it seemed eternal but Liverpool have what they will believe is their hour of destiny: they are in the Champions League Final where they will face Real Madrid.
With two clubs imbued with such rich European history it is a final to savour and not least because both sides glory in attack, rather than defence, with Jurgen Klopp’s full-throttle football taking on the self-proclaimed kings of this competition and hoping to deny them a third successive Champions League trophy.
Such is the high-wire nature of Liverpool’s football that Roma, unbelievably, fell just one goal short of forcing extra-time and replicating the score from the first leg. Even with a couple of minutes to go it was tense and nerve-racking. It could have been even worse had Roma been awarded another penalty they should have got soon after scoring their second.
It meant this semi-final racked up 13 goals – the most ever in a tie at this stage of the competition while, gloriously, Liverpool have scored an incredible 46 goals in this wonderful campaign, more than any team ever.
No-one will bet against them adding to that total in Kiev on May 26 for what will be a re-run of the 1981 final. Liverpool won that in Paris and, as then, will not fear Real. Do not expect another 1-0, though as Liverpool reached their first Champions League Final in 11 years and their eighth in all.
Much was made of Roma’s home record, of not conceding a goal in the Champions League this season, of whether they could use that as a platform to needing the three goals – just the three goals - to progress. That notion lasted less than nine minutes. Liverpool scored. And scored a trademark Liverpool goal full of counter-attacking purpose, precision and coolness.
It also stemmed from an appalling error by Roma’s Radja Nainggolan who inexplicably played a pass infield straight to Roberto Firmino who snaffled it up, strode forward and picked out Sadio Mane who had peeled away to his left and was afforded the space to steer his shot beyond goalkeeper Allison. Five thousands Liverpool fans were delirious; the near 70,000 Roma supporters were stunned.
Was it already over? It seemed so as Mane became the first opposition player to score against Roma here since Feb 2016. Soon there was another Liverpool player on the score-sheet. Just as it seemed hope had already gone for Roma they profited from an own goal. It seemed innocuous enough when Stephan El Shaarawy headed back a deep cross with Dejan Lovren hoisting his clearance – only for the ball to smash into James Milner’s head and rebound into the net. Back as we were then with Roma again needing three goals. And just 15 minutes had passed.
It was cruel luck for Liverpool and re-fired Italian belief, driving up the decibels and desperation even further. That belief had stemmed from the comeback in the quarter-finals when they were 4-1 down to Barcelona and they overcame Messi & Co 3-0. A miracle, coach Eusebio Di Francesco had called it, and they needed another and already they had benefited from some divine intervention with that own goal. Maybe Liverpool could have managed the situation better, of course.
Did they need some assistance of their own? Well, they got it. They scored again and, this time, the inadvertent involvement was that of Edin Dzeko who tried to head a corner clear under pressure from Virgil Van Dijk but sent it back towards his own goal where Georginio Wijnaldum stole forward to nod it home and restore Liverpool’s lead and extend their advantage. Wow.
The corner had come after a fine save, with his boot, by Allison to deny Mane following a strong run and pull-back by Andrew Robertson. This time the atmosphere was finally dampened and every time Liverpool pushed on there was a collective intake of breath from the Roma fans. Twice already their defence had been breached and the second goal was Wijnaldum’s first ever away from home for Liverpool. It was quite a time to do that.
The theory had been that one quick goal could rapidly distort perceptions which were altered already by Roma’s two late goals at Anfield – something Klopp rationalised about pre-match as he rightly stated that Liverpool had a formidable three-goal advantage. Now there were three inside the first-half hour and Liverpool were in an even stronger position. Four up.
Roma had to push on and did so with El Shaarawy cutting inside and shooting. Again Lovren intervened, deflecting the ball against Loris Karius’ left-hand post and away. Soon after and Roma unsuccessfully demanded a penalty as El Shaarawy went down.
Again Roma hoped to have a penalty and would have done so, after Karius brought down Dzeko, had the striker not been flagged for a very tight off-side. Just as Roma felt aggrieved, they managed to pull a goal back as Trent Alexander-Arnold – who was clearly being targeted - was easily beaten by El Shaarawy who moved inside and forced Karius to push out a curling shot with, unfortunately, the ball dropping to Dzeko who drove it smartly back across the goalkeeper and into the net. Nerves frayed once more and remarkably Roma should have scored again when substitute Cengiz Under was picked out with a long ball – only to volley straight at Karius.
The pressure grew and grew and Roma pleaded for another penalty, with even more justification, as Alexander-Arnold blocked El Shaarawy’s goal-bound close-range shot with his outstretched arm before, soon after, Dzeko swivelled and shot wide.
The clock ticked slowly with Alexander-Arnold again caught out only for Karius to turn away another Dzeko shot. Eventually he was beaten as the ball was squared to Nainggolan outside the area who powered a low shot back across the goalkeeper and in off the post. Roma scored again. In injury-time substitute Ragnar Klavan was punished for handball and Nainggolan drove home the penalty. Finally, though, time did run out. It was the last kick.
Liverpool fans having a great time
They're singing songs as the Liverpool players dance around in front of them. What an insane game that was. I love that Liverpool chose not to shut up shop and try to lock that one down. It might seem reckless but having that attacking mentality helps with the defensive side of the game as Roma can't commit too many forwards and it means the front three can enjoy space in the Roma half.
That didn't quite work tonight but the two goals Liverpool scored proved crucial and there was always going to be a late surge of momentum from the home side.
Andy Robertson is delighted
"What a thing to be involved in, we've come through every challenge we've been set so far. All the lads, our fans deserve it and we'll have a great day in Kiev regardless of the result.
"It's hard when you come in to defend a lead and we've managed to do that. We've ended up getting beat but the lads have been different class, all the boys have been brilliant and deserve it.
"This time last season we were fighting for our lives at Hull and fell short but now I feel like I'm home and we'll enjoy this result. We've got a few big games coming up.
"We'll go in as underdogs but sometimes that's a good thing. We'll try our best. The fans will have a great day out and hopefully we'll bring the trophy back!"
GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!
What a hit! Nainggolan hits one from 20 yards! He doesn't even celebrate but the technique to hit this one is superb. He lets the ball roll across him and then puts his foot through it, sending it flying to the far post. It smacks off the upright and then hits the back of the net on the opposite side - Karius is hopelessly beaten!
85 mins
That's a great photo. Meanwhile, on the pitch, Robertson chases Florenzi all the way to the corner flag, Florenzi blocks him with his back and all the way out onto the running track. Robertson gives him a little shove and he goes flying! Manolas squares up to him for it and is booked, Robertson is booked too.
82 mins
Great pass by Nainggolan! He spots Dzeko's run in behind the Liverpool right-back, Dzeko controls it first time and shoots across goal! Karius saves! But he's spilled it again and Lovren comes in to boot the thing away.
Alisson goes on a mad goalkeeper run into his own corner flag and very nearly hands possession to Salah. He gets away with it and receives a standing ovation from the home crowd, which is absolutely great.
66 mins
Roma come down the left, there's space to attack and Kolarov hits a low ball to the near post! Karius misses it but the ball stays out of the goal and Liverpool get it away! Or do they? It's chipped back in for Dzeko, who looks offside, controls, and shoots into the side-netting.
The replay shows he was onside and one-on-one.
Roma have had the chances to get back in this one.
64 mins
CHANCE FOR ROMA! Nainggolan crosses in, Dzeko heads on, it beats everyone and falls to Shaarawy!!! It deflects off Alexander-Arnold and goes over the bar!
The replay shows that came off the defender's hand and that should have been a penalty! Liverpool have gotten away with two big decisions now!
62 mins
SAVE BY KARIUS! It's another of those Hollywood balls over the top and Under gets a touch on it inside the area but can't divert it past the goalkeeper.
Henderson was shouting at Karius to come out off his line and catch those balls over the top - it's been Roma's most dangerous attacking outlet.
60 mins
Wijnaldum steals the ball near his own box, runs up the pitch with hit and then sends a difficult through-pass towards Salah. The defender easily blocks him out of it.
Salah gets the ball on his chest shortly after and plays in Wijnaldum but there's a foul in there somewhere and Roma have possession back.
49 mins
Alisson waits for the ball to bounce in the box before he picks it up and Firmino very nearly steals it from him on the edge of the area.
Robertson goes on a bursting run, burning past his man with pace and getting all the way to the halfway line. He's so quick that Salah doesn't get back onside before sprinting.
44 mins
Liverpool's forward three are getting so much time and space to play in the Roma half. El Shaarawy tries to go round Lovren, slips (with a little shove from Lovren) and goes down on the edge of the area. The referee books Lovren for it. That's never a booking, let alone a foul for me but I'm not a professional referee.
42 mins
Great play from Liverpool as they stroke the ball around the Roma half, always finding someone in space and allowing the move to keep flowing. Salah plays in Mane behind the defence but it's wide of goal... and he backheels it off his own shin and gives away a goal kick.
Replays of that penalty moment show that Shaarawy was at it, throwing himself to the floor to con the referee. Alexander-Arnold pulls his foot away just in time before he makes contact.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!
ROMA ARE LEVEL! It's a bizarre own goal off James Milner! One of the strangest you'll ever see. The ball is hit high to the back post on the left, headed in to the six yard area and a defender boots the thing away just as a striker is about to hit at goal at the near post. He accidentally thumps the ball off Milner's face and it bounces into the net!
9 mins
Roma are going in hard and early on Salah. Kolarov bundles through the back of him now but again there's no yellow card.
The ball is kicked long to Mane in the area, he goes to chest it... and he's bundled to the ground! Is that a penalty?! No! The referee isn't buying it but Manolas took a huge risk pushing him there!
6 mins
De Rossi is a bit late to the tackle on Salah and catches him. If that had been later on in the game it's a certain yellow but the referee keeps his cards safe in his pocket, Roma win the ball back immediately from the free-kick.
Liverpool are defending as a 4-4-2, with Salah and Firmino staying up and Mane tucking in. I think that'll change depending on the side that Roma attack.
Dzeko is strong and runs in behind the last man on the right of the penalty box! He's at too narrow an angle to do anything with it though and just pokes the ball across the area.
4 mins
Roma are in total control of the ball at the moment and are moving it around Liverpool's final third. They win a corner, which Kolarov comes across to take. It's curled out to the six yard box... and just doesn't drop for anyone! Liverpool get lucky there but now they're on the counter! Salah leads the charge, whistles ring out around the ground and the goalkeeper is able to pick the ball up as it is chested back to him.
Jurgen Klopp seems overly happy
That's surely a management technique to try and calm the players down. Some of them will be terrified by this setting! A beaming smile, some laughs and these words from the Liverpool manager:
"As happy as you can be before a game, I want to be happy after a game!
"When you see the lineup of Roma they cause you problems, we win at home a good result, the opponent comes back, it was clear we'd have to work again. We are here not to defend the three goal lead we are here to win the football game.
"It's similar. We didn't have the plan to get as much under pressure as we did, it's not easy to find solution in a game, it was good at half time, we played much better but I loved both halves in that game. Let's see, it will be an intense start and then we have to be ready."
Are you excited yet?
The tension is building! The players are warming up, the crowd is loooouuuuuud and already nearly full. Kick-off is 20something minutes away... it's nearly here!
However, some supporters are having real trouble getting in. This was from about half an hour ago:
The ex-pro view on it
Steven Gerrard
"Liverpool players should be laid back, excited and ready to go. They'll be aware of the Barcelona fixture and use that as motivation but I'm sure thats part of Jurgen's team talk."
Frank Lampard
"The moment they step out on that team they need to be so focused. "
Rio Ferdinand
"[Di Francesco] will have seen something here, the way he set the team up last time was suicidal, you're gonna see a difference."

My god it's beautiful. Art... will never be the same again.
Buonasera!
Welcome to our liveblog for this enormous occasion, a Champions League semi-final second leg between AS Roma and Liverpool! Real Madrid await the winner in the final but who will join them? Liverpool have a three goal lead, Roma have two away goals - and they already completed one miraculous comeback against the mighty Barcelona before that.
Liverpool fans have been enjoying themselves in Rome all day, taking in the beautiful sights, sounds and culture... of the local bars, where beer isn't particularly cheap.
(On a strange side note, I noticed when in Rome that they seem to think Tennent's Super is not only an acceptable lager, but something which should be considered a treat and have money spent on it).
That won't matter to Liverpool fans though and by all accounts, there's been no trouble whatsoever thus far.
Team news should be with us at about 6:30pm-ish, possibly closer to 6:45pm, and at that point we'll be able to figure out how both managers plan to approach this one. Roma will likely revert to their preferred 4-3-3 and really take the game to Liverpool, who will again try to utilise their pace and trickery to grab that one crucial away goal which would kill off the tie.
