Bhopal: A major portion of the city will not be supplied water on Wednesday and Thursday following the maintenance work on Kolar pipeline. Bhopal Municipal Corporation is all set to replace the damaged pipelines, which is causing loss of gallons of water.
The civic body will replace the three decades old pipelines with new broader one to cater to the increased demand. The pipeline has developed many leakages owing to which precious water is being lost. According to sources, the amount of water lost during leakage could almost cater to water demand of the entire city for almost eight days.
However, it is still to be seen whether the repaired and new Kolar pipelines will be able to meet the required need of the residents. According to sources, the new pipeline measuring 1650 mm wide in diameter are proposed to be laid in the city. The old pipeline was of 1500 mm diameter and was struggling hard to supply the required water.
The old pipeline was laid down around three decades back and water consumption has increased manifold in the city owing to rise in population and various other factors. It seems that the authorities failed to do the simple math while calculating the demand and supply as the new pipeline of 1650 mm diameter will not be able to fulfill the increasing demand.
BMC officials, however, say that even the new pipeline with increased width will not help much as the water level in Kolar is depleting fast. Surendra Wadika, MIC of water works department state that the diameter of the pipeline has been sanctioned as per the norms and claimed that no water crisis issue will arise due to it.
