Snap introduces second-generation Spectacles glasses with photo-capture ability, water resistance

Shares of Snap Inc. are up 2.8% in Thursday morning trading after the company announced its second-generation Spectacles model, a pair of sunglasses that can capture photos. The prior version could only take videos. The new Spectacles are also water resistant in shallow water and cost $149.99. The glasses feature the same round design as the previous model did, but the company says they will transfer footage to the Snapchat app up to four times faster. Snap's price gains Thursday also come after fellow social-media company Facebook Inc. reported strong results for its first quarter. Snap shares are down 33% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 11%.

Zuckerberg says Facebook to support Honest Ads Act

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said Friday that the company plans to support the Honest Ads Act. Facebook stock is down nearly 1% to $157.77 in late afternoon trading. The Honest Ads Act is a bill that would hold social media platforms such as Facebook and rivals Twitter Inc. and Snap Inc. to the same political advertising rules as TV, print and radio. It has not yet been passed into law. "Election interference is a problem that's bigger than any one platform, and that's why we support the Honest Ads Act," the CEO wrote. "This will help raise the bar for all political advertising online." In a Facebook post Friday, Zuckerberg outlined several changes to its ads platform: to run political or issue ads on the site the company would now require the client verify their identity and location. Zuckerberg also wrote that the company will require people who manage large pages -- he did not specify a threshold -- to be verified as well. Facebook stock is down 10% this year, as the S&P 500 index has fallen 3%.

Facebook stock falls after Morgan Stanley cuts price target, lowers pricing-growth forecast

Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak cut his price target on Facebook Inc. to $200 from $230 Wednesday, though he kept his overweight rating on the stock. "Over the long-term, we think the elimination of third parties is smart strategically," Nowak wrote. At the same time, he updated his near-term view to be more conservative, which now includes a lower forecast for ad-price increases this year. He currently projects 25% growth in ad prices. Facebook shares are down 1.1% in Wednesday trading, while Snap Inc. shares are up 3.2% and Twitter Inc. shares are up 2.4%. Facebook's stock is up 9% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 11%.

Snap adds group video chat feature

Snap Inc. said Tuesday that it has launched a group video chat feature for its Snapchat app. Snap stock is down 3.3% to $13.99 in mid-afternoon trading. In a blog post, the company said the group chat will let 16 people talk at once and will roll out to its users around the world this week. Facebook Inc.-owned Instagram has a track record of adding similar features after Snap adds them to its app. Snap stock is down 4% this year, as the benchmark S&P 500 index has fallen 3.4%.

Snap in 'potentially promising position' after Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal, says analyst

Analyst James Cakmak of Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co. wrote Tuesday that Snap Inc. might be in a relatively good position in the wake of Facebook Inc.'s Cambridge Analytica scandal, due to Snap's "relatively stricter privacy parameters." He argued that Snap doesn't collect data from direct messages sent on the platform and limits the data that third-party developers can access. "The targeting and measurement criticisms previously waged on the company given the limitations to data may end up serving as a blessing in disguise," Cakmak wrote. "It's our understanding Snap is not explicitly using Facebook's challenges as a source of negotiating leverage; however, the relative underinvestment on the platform from advertisers and agencies presents opportunities to close the gap." Cakmak has a hold rating on Snap shares, which are down 3.7% in Tuesday morning trading. Snap's stock is down 38% over the past 12 months, compared with a 10% gain for the S&P 500 in that time.
