Diego Maradona was sensationally re-appointed by Fujairah for another year late on Monday just two days after parting company with the club for failing to gain automatic promotion to the Arabian Gulf League (AGL).

A tweet from Fujairah’s twitter account read: “Under the direction of the president of Fujairah Club, Diego Maradona returns to lead the Wolves and renews for another year.”

Fujairah missed out on automatic promotion to the AGL after a 1-1 draw at home to Khor Fakkan in the last game of the UAE First Division (second tier) season on Friday. That saw them finish third behind champions Bani Yas and runners-up Kalba.

Maradona’s subsequent and short-lived departure thereafter came as a surprise given that Fujairah could still qualify for next season’s AGL via the play-offs, where they play Hatta over two legs on May 9 and May 13.

Now it seems that sense has finally prevailed and the Argentine 1986 World Cup winner will get the chance to give promotion via the play-offs a shot after all.

Even if he fails over two legs against Hatta, a one-year contract extension suggests another shot at promotion to the top flight with Fujairah next season.
