CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Police Department say public assistance helped identify a suspect in a March theft.
On March 26, police requested the public’s help in identifying a suspect who allegedly used a stolen credit card to purchase items at two southwest neighborhood merchants on March 4.
Photos of the suspect and the suspect vehicle were posted on the police department’s Facebook page and by local media. According to a Cedar Rapids Police Department news release, the police department received several tips that helped identify the suspect.
On Tuesday, Sonya Jean Cungtion, 45, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested on two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card for one transaction that equated to more than $1,000 at Wal-Mart and another transaction of less than $1,000 at Video Games, Etc., according to news release.
Police say Cungtion was charged with a Class D felony, punishable up to five years in prison, and an aggravated misdemeanor.
According to the news release, investigators determined the credit card had been stolen from a parked vehicle across the street from the suspect’s apartment about one to two hours before the transactions were made.
“The police department is appreciative of the public’s assistance with this case,” the news release stated.
