KOLKATA: Metro Railway is still searching for the young couple who was allegedly assaulted by a mob at the
Dum Dum station on Monday evening for standing close to each other inside a train compartment. While station staff at Dum Dum were quizzed by officials on Tuesday, no official inquiry could start due to the absence of a complaint by the victims.
“We appeal to either of the two to come forward and lodge a complaint with details of what went on. Metro Railway does not support
moral policing or any sort of violence. We are still going through
CCTV footage to try and find out what actually happened as station staff seem to be unaware of anything,” Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee said.
The altercation between the couple and some elderly passengers allegedly started several stations before the train reached Dum Dum. While the elderly passengers were opposed to alleged public display of affection by the couple, the youngsters insisted they were doing no wrong. Snide remarks by other commuters seem to have started after that with many siding with the elderly passengers. Some asked the couple to go to a park or a pub or even rent a hotel room.
It was reported that an unruly mob finally dragged out the young man at Dum Dum station and started thrashing him. Even the young woman wasn’t spared when she attempted to save her friend from the blows.
“The couple should have immediately lodged a complaint at the station. We urge all passengers not to tolerate such behavior and lodge complaints so immediate action can be taken,” Banerjee added.
