RIMS liftman’s indifference claims pregnant woman’s life

A 30-year old pregnant woman, Sunita Devi, died on Monday morning at RIMS while she was kept waiting outside the lift by the liftman for no significant reasons.

According to sources, the liftman did not allow Sunita’s trolley to get inside the lift for more than half-an hour. Sunita was supposed to be taken to the labour room and needed immediate medical attention. However, the lift near Medicine Department remained occupied. Despite requesting the liftman several times, he kept ignoring the pleas of the attendants. Also, none of the administrative personnel were present at the moment. As per the reports, the lift was occupied by the internal staffs for maximum time who were taking food for the patients.

Besides the family members who accompanied Sunita, the trolley man also requested the liftman to allow her to get inside the lift considering the complexity of the case. Sunita was brought to RIMS by her husband Kartik Oraon around 7:00 AM from Ratu, Ranchi.

Ironically, none of the senior administrative personnel had any information about this incident till late afternoon. “I came to know about this through media reports and coverage. Stringent action will be taken against the main accused, if found guilty. It must be noted that lifts are for patients’ convenience first. Later in free time, it can be used by other staffs. All staffs must take care of the fact that it is their prime duty to first address the need and requirements of the patients,” said Acting Director, RIMS, Dr. RK Srivastava.

Notably, this is not for the first time when such an incident has taken place exposing the arrangements of RIMS administration. Earlier also, many incidents of inhumane treatment have come up presenting a gloomy picture of this renowned hospital.
