Seven DMK local functionaries were arrested here today for leading a demonstration seeking a detailed inquiry into the unearthing of a unit manufacturing banned tobacco products like gutka and paan masala, police said.
Leaders, including former president of Kannampalayam panchayat Murugesan, were held for holding the protest in front of the unit without permission, they said.
Police said they were searching for DMK MLA N Karthik, who also participated in the protest during which the agitators alleged that the ruling AIADMK was "attempting to hush up the case."
Those arrested were produced before Sulur Court, where Magistrate C Vediyappan remanded them to 15 days judicial custody, they said.
Police had unearthed the unit and recovered large quantities of finished products and raw material from a godown in Kannampalayam on April 28 and arrested four workers of the unit.
A police team is searching for the owner of the unit Amit Jain, who hails from New Delhi.
