Neighbours band together for Bob, the WWII soldier who lost all in fire

Thousands of dollars have been raised for a World War II veteran who lost everything in a house fire in Brisbane's south on Sunday night.

Neighbours helped 99-year-old Bob escape his Salisbury home as fire ripped through his property.

One of his beloved dogs died in the blaze.

Firefighters managed to save most of Bob’s war medals and memorabilia but his clothes, photos and other possessions were destroyed.

Neighbours have since banded together and set up a gofundme page for the war veteran, who had no insurance.

Since Monday afternoon more than $9000 had been raised by friends and family to support Bob as he recovered in hospital.

Friend Jason Bond posted to social media on Monday evening to let everyone know Bob was “eating well and stable”.

“All he owns now is the clothes on his back, he is way too proud to ask for help, everyone's help is greatly appreciated,” he wrote.

"He had no insurance and has little in the bank for a rainy day as most of his fortnightly pension is donated to charities."

The search continues Bob's other dog Peppe, who remains missing.
