May Day 2018 rally: Central London facing disruption from middayProtesters will take to the capital today for an annual May Day rally, marking International Workers' Day in a march for trade union rights and against austerity.

Hundreds are expected to gather from midday, with parts of London likely to face disruption as a result.

The march is part of the international day supporting employees' rights, human rights, and against capitalism with other protests planned around the world.

The route
· The May Day 2018 group will assemble at Clerkenwell Green at 12pm, near Farringdon station, with a march to Trafalgar Square.
· After leaving Clerkenwell Green at 1pm, the route passes along Clerkenwell Road, Theobald's Road, Red Lion Square, Kingsway, Aldwych and the Strand to arrive at Trafalgar Square around 2.25pm
· The rally gets underway in Trafalgar Square from 2.30pm
· Last year the Met Police closed roads as the march passed through and then reopened, with drivers told to expect delays

The London May Day organising committee is supported by a number of trade unions including train drivers' union Aslef, the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, Unite, and the TSSA. 

On the May Day site, organisers said the march is supporting workers and fighting for their needs.

"May Day in Britain used to signify the renewal of life as winter turned to spring, likewise the Labour movement honours its origins," the site said. 

Protesters will be joined in central London by a number of speakers from trade unions.
