ID cards for transgenders

The district administration on Monday issued identity cards to 27 transgender persons who have been found eligible by a district-level screening committee. District Collector U.V. Jose distributed the cards at an event organised by the Social Justice Department at the Civil Station.

An identity card approved by the Department of Social Justice was a long-pending demand of the transgender community in the district. Cicily George, leader of a transgender people’s welfare organisation, said the card would help them for applying various jobs.

Mr. Jose said the cards would be issued to all eligible applicants and that it would help them to make use of various government welfare schemes. He urged them to take advantage of various continuing education programmes and rehabilitation schemes.
