Series of  controversial statement by senior  leaders of the Congress and the BJP about the Aligarh muslim university and RSS seeking to hold `shah’ in muslim university campus have embroiled the  century old  academic institution  in controversies leading the students of the University to serve legal notice of the BJP seeking unconditional apology from him.

Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union president Mashkoor Ahmad Uamani has sent a legal notice to BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy for what he called, making a “false and mischievous” statement against AMU by dubbing it as an “atankwadi vichardhara ka adda (a hub of terrorist ideology)”.

Swami’s remarks came in response to Congress leader Salman Khurshid’s controversial comments that “Congress has blood of Muslims on its hands”, which he made at a recent interaction in the University. On April 25 senior Congress leader and former Union law minister Salman Khurshid has stirred a controversy by saying that his party’s hands “are stained with the blood of Muslims”.

The former Union minister made the controversial remark during an interaction session with students at Dr BR Ambedkar Hall in AMU. Khurshid, while replying to a question by a former AMU student, on the series of communal riots that happened during the decades of Congress rule had said, “There is blood on our hands too.”

Usmani said Swamy’s accusation have been mischievously designed to defame and malign AMU and to discredit it as an institution of higher learning. He said such comments adversely affect the prospects of university students. Uamani demanded from Swamy to tender an unconditional apology within seven days of the receipt of the legal notice. “If he fails to do so, legal proceedings will be initiated against him,” he warned.

“We had urged the BJP Rajya Sabha MP   to apologise for his statement but he didn’t do so,” said the AMUSU president He said AMU is an institution of national importance and many country’s heads/politicians/historians/scientists have passed out of it.

“Swami’s allegations have hurt the sentiments and shattered the confidence of students,” said Uamani, adding that the BJP leader has failed in his duty as a responsible parliamentarian. The legal notice states that Swami’s statement smacks of a conspiracy hatched by him in pursuit of a hidden agenda to divide citizens and to jeopardize the future prospects of students of AMU.

AMUSU, president said that it’s ironical that while the President of India Ram Nath Kovind says that people with “Secular” mind live in AMU, Swami was making such statements. “Swami must now clarify whether he disputes President of India’s words,” he said.

In the memorandum to President of India Ram Nath Kovind, Usmani said that Swami’s statement has deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of AMUites who are spread across the world. His statement has affected the secular image of the nation and hence his membership of the upper house should be cancelled. “He is not mentally fit to be a part of it,” he said

Former president of students union Faizul Hassan said that AMU is the institute which has produced many political leaders, scientists, historians and educationists and political leaders like Swami were giving such irresponsible and “poisonous” statement. He said, “He and his ideology can’t see the community excel in life.” He added that Swami’s sole motive of life is to “defame, divide and finish Muslims”.
