Engineering college robbed

Burglars broke into the office of City Engineering College on Kanakapura Road and robbed ₹1 lakh cash and the digital video recording (DVR) from the CCTV cameras last Tuesday.

Though there were two security guards deployed at the college, they were found sleeping inside the bus parked on the campus as it was raining.

The theft came to light the next morning when staff members found that principal’s chamber ransacked and the cash and DVR stolen.

Principal P. Rajshekhar said: “We have asked for a change of security from the agency. The money that was stolen was part of the college fund,” he said.

An FIR was filed on the same day at Subramanyapura police station. “The security guards inside the bus did not respond despite the barking of dogs at the gates. The robbers gained entry by breaking open the hand lock and crow bar. Though there were CCTV cameras installed in the college, it was of no use as the accused had taken away the DVR. However, we are trying to verify the CCTV footage from in and around the area to identify them,” the police said.

Woman held for killing husband

The Kumaraswamy Layout police arrested a 35-year-old woman for allegedly strangling her husband to death following an argument over a curry in their house in Pragatipura on Sunday night.

The accused Rudramma spent the whole night with the dead body to plan for its disposal. Initially, she decided to ferry the body in a car to her native Tamil Nadu to dispose it, but fearing police check due to elections, she dropped the idea and tried to make it look like her husband Gopal (44) died due to excessive alcoholism, the police said.

The crime came to light when the neighbours, who heard the commotion late at night and then about Gopal’s death in the morning, alerted the police.

The police found a ligature mark on the neck and questioned Rudramma, following which she confessed to the crime.

Rudramma told the police that Gopal was a chronic alcoholic and used to harass her. The couple hailed from Tamil Nadu and have three children. They were both fruit merchants and had been living in a three-storeyed house in Pragathipura in Kumaraswamy Layout. While the couple were living in the second floor, her parents were living in the first floor.

On Sunday, Gopal came home drunk and created a ruckus after he found chicken curry for dinner and demanded mutton curry. Following an argument, Rudramma sent her three children to her parents’ house. Her parents came up and tried intervening. When Gopal became uncontrollable, Rudramma, with the help of her parents, tied Gopal’s hands and legs and dumped him in the corner.

After her parents left the house, Gopal began to hurl abuses and threatened Rudramma with dire consequences. Enraged, Rudramma strangled him with her sari killing him on the spot, the police said.

The police have arrested Rudramma and remanded her to judicial custody.
