City Police introduce point of sale machines to collect fine

As part of bringing in transparency in the system, the Coimbatore City Police have introduced point of sale (POS) machines (swiping machine) to collect fine for traffic offences.

Traffic violators who receive challan can now pay fine instantly using their credit or debit cards. The POS machines will be put to use from Tuesday.

Launching the POS machines, City Police Commissioner K. Periaiah said that cashless transaction using the swiping machines will help the force get rid of irregularities alleged in fine collection.

To begin with, State Bank of India has handed over 17 POS machines to the traffic police.

Traffic offenders will be issued a challan mentioning the amount of fine from the e-challan machine. Each e-challan will have a specific challan number that will be entered in the POS machine while collecting the fine.

The fine collected using the machines will be credited to the bank account of the City Police and later transferred to the treasury.

All the transactions made using the POS machines will have digital records that cannot be tampered with.

The traffic police are currently using 19 e-challan machines.

Mr. Periaiah said that the City Police have so far collected ₹1.6 crore in form of fine in the current year as against ₹1.2 crore collected in the same period in 2017. He said that deaths due to traffic accidents have reduced to nine in the current year, from 22 reported in the same period in 2017.
