Shift focus from earning money to expenditure

This refers to editorial, “Yet another jolt” (April 27). It is indeed a body blow to the commuters of the national Capital who use the services of the metro. Significant drop in ridership is a testimony of a substantial increase in metro fare last year. To top it up, the recently announced metro parking fare hike that will be initiated from May 1, will only make people wonder whether travelling by metro is a viable option anymore. The fares witnessing a 50 per cent increase across different slabs came as a move months after the metro fare hike.

Lesser we say about poor last transport connectivity, better it is. There is no doubt that the  Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has the right to earn money on its expenditure but if it becomes the sole objective of their operation, then it really defies the whole purpose of having this kind of public infrastructure in place.

On one hand, the Government wants people to use public transport as much as possible and on the other, if travelling becomes such a huge burden on their pocket, there is a huge disconnect between Government and DMRC. It is better both stakeholders sit and discuss all issues rather than putting such continuous burden on public.
