DeKALB – While police continue trying to identify people involved in a melee in the Annie Glidden North neighborhood, a woman accused of swinging a hammer during the fracas has posted bail, DeKalb police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas said.

Police responded at 9:06 p.m. Tuesday to the 900 and 1000 blocks of West Hillcrest Drive, where Lekkas said more than 50 people who were fighting scattered and fled. Valerie Wright, however, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery, and posted bail at the police department.

Lekkas said Wright was swinging a hammer and grazed another woman’s face, cutting her.

“If there were more significant injuries, we would have sought more serious charges,” Lekkas said.

He said no one was seriously hurt during the fight, and that no one accepted medical treatment.

Lekkas said the fight was prompted by a girl younger than 18 being “jumped” earlier in the evening, and that when her parents went to address the situation with the suspect’s parents, things escalated quickly.

Lekkas said a cookout was going on, and attendees got involved, as did onlookers. He said the fight mostly involved children, but some adults joined in, and upward of 100 people were involved.

NIU police officers and DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene, and no officers were hurt, Lekkas said, adding that the department still is investigating the incident.
