Editor's note: This letter as been corrected to note that Michael Dougherty worked for Colorado Attorney General John Suthers and for a Republican district attorney in Jefferson and Gilpin counties. Additionally, Dougherty has been a Boulder resident for 10 years.

I am proud to be a Boulder County Native. I'm an educator and active member of my community. My family has been in this area for over a century.

It doesn't take a native to know that Boulder County's way of life is unique and we need a district attorney who has a burning passion for protecting it. Looking at the upcoming special election for district attorney, I see only one candidate who fits that bill: Rep. Mike Foote.

Mike Foote has been a part of this community for nearly two decades. He's served us honorably as a prosecutor in the Boulder District Attorney's office for 14 years. He's been my state representative for six years. He knows Boulder County. He is Boulder County.

Mike's opponent had barely even set foot in the Boulder District Attorney's office before being appointed to run it by the governor. His only past experience in Colorado had been working for a Republican attorney general and prosecuting cases in Jefferson and Gilpin County. He may have some prosecutorial experience and a Boulder address, but he certainly doesn't have roots here.

I want my district attorney, and all my elected community leaders, to have real roots in this community. Judging by the more than 70 other community leaders who have endorsed Mike, I'd say I'm not alone.

That, among many other reasons, is why I so enthusiastically support Mike Foote for Boulder County district attorney. He's Boulder County's candidate in this race. He's the right person for the job. As DA, he'll put Boulder County's values first by protecting the immigrant community, enacting progressive criminal justice reform measures, enforcing our environmental laws, and he won't prosecute people simply for being homeless. He will be a great district attorney.
