Coronation Street news: Alya Nazir star criticised by Muslim family for steamy storylines
CORONATION STREET actress Sair Khan faced backlash from her Muslim family for participating in risqué Alya Nazir scenes, which included partying in nightclubs and kissing co-star Jack P. Shepherd.
Sair Khan is said to have disappointed her devout Muslim family with her controversial Coronation Street storylines.
Fans of the ITV soap have watched the 30-year-old actress enjoy her fair share of romantic flings and wild nights out.
But it is these plots which are believed to have infuriated her family, according to her former co-star Marc Anwar.
The 62-year-old actor, who played Sharif Nazir between 2014 and 2016, said she faced backlash from her relatives because of their religious views.
He said: “When Sair joined, her very first scenes showed her letting her hair down in some nightclub, snogging people and that kind of thing.
In the Muslim religion, it doesn’t matter if you are playing a part, you do what you do.
“She has had scenes where she has been rolling around in bed with people.
“In the Muslim religion, it doesn’t matter if you are playing a part, you do what you do.”
He went on to tell The Sun on Sunday: “As far as I understand it, some of Sair’s relatives weren’t too happy because of the show.
“That’s what she told me quite soon after we began working together. It was her choice, of course.”
His comments come shortly after he accused former Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote of refusing a Muslim romance storyline with Zeedan Nazir (played by Qasim Akhtar).

He told the publication: “The storyline was that he would then ask her to become a Muslim.
“But when that was put to her she declined. I don’t know what her reasons were.”
He continued: “But she was adamant she didn’t want to do that storyline. And so the response was, ‘OK, see you later.’
“They couldn’t just let her go, because they would have been forced to continue paying her.
“But she spent the rest of the year doing bit scenes here and there.”

Hitting back following the claim, Georgia, 27, fumed: “Fake s***”, meanwhile a Coronation Street spokesman also denied the reports.
A representative told Express.co.uk: “Georgia May Foote did not refuse to do any storylines during her time on the show.”
They added: “As an actress she would have absolutely relished such a role.”
Coronation Street continues tomorrow on ITV at 7.30pm.
