Tirupur: Police foiled two suicide bids during the grievance day meeting at the district collectorate on Monday.
A 29-year-old married woman, along with her father, brother and her child drenched themselves in petrol and tried to set themselves on fire at the collectorate. But police personnel managed to stop them.

She was identified as Madhu Bharathi, daughter of Muralikannan from Tirupur. “Madhu Bharathi had married Karthik Kumar of Vadipatti in Madurai three years ago. Karthik, a Tangedco employee and Madhu were settled in Madurai with their child. Karthik allegedly used to torture her demanding dowry. Tirupur South All Women Police had registered an FIR against Karthik. Later, he obtained anticipatory bail to avoid arrest. Claiming that police did not take action against him, Madhu Bharathi, along with her father, brother Mohan Ram and baby tried to set themselves ablaze,” a police officer said.

In the second incident, an 80-year-old man from Palladam tried to set himself on fire over a property dispute with his son. “Muthusamy, who owns a few acres of land, has a son and a daughter. His son Maruthachalam tortures him demanding the property, the old man said. Despite lodging a complaint with Palladam police, no appropriate action was taken against the son. So, he wanted the collector to intervene in the issue,” the officer added.
