US Not After Korean Peace

A lawmaker questioned the US welcoming of recent South-North Koreas’ detente, saying Washington is not seeking permanent peace in the peninsula, as it would deprive it of any pretext to continue its profitable military presence there.
“The US has always made a profit out of the tension dominating the Korean Peninsula. It can justify its presence in the region, as well as selling weapons to Japan and South Korea,” Kamal Dehqani Firouzabadi, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told ICANA on Sunday. Firouzabadi highlighted Washington’s persistent effort to act as a “guardian” for South Korea and Japan, adding that the phony posture is just a ploy to increase US sway in South Asia. While warning about US meddling, he acknowledged the commitment of Japan, China and South Korea to ease the tensions to resolve regional security issues and facilitate business relations. The leaders of the Koreas met at a historic peace summit on Friday, promising “complete denuclearization” of the peninsula.  According to Reuters, the United States stations 28,500 troops in South Korea. Washington contends its presence there is due to the threat posed by the North nuclear program.
